Pygmy-Leaved LupineLupinus bicolorHeight: Usually 4 to 12 inches tall Habitat: Grassy slopes, open fields, and desert edges; often in sandy or well-drained soils Elevation: Found from low elevations up to around 5,000 feet Range: Widespread in California, including the Mojave Desert margins, coastal regions, foothills, and into parts of the southwestern U.S. Description: Pygmy-Leaved Lupine is a small, spring-blooming annual with soft, divided leaves and short flower spikes. The flowers are pea-shaped and typically bi-colored—blue or violet with touches of white or yellow. As its name suggests, it has small leaves compared to other lupines. Uses: Ecological: Fixes nitrogen in the soil, helping to improve soil health. It also supports native pollinators, including bees and butterflies. Cultural: Not widely used for food or medicine, but admired for its beauty and role in early spring wildflower displays. Note: Pygmy-Leaved Lupine is small but mighty—brightening hillsides and open fields in early spring. It’s a gentle sign that winter has passed and the desert is waking up. |
