UNCONFORMITY - An unconformity is a surface in the rock record that represents a break or gap in geologic time. This gap can occur when older rock layers are eroded away before new layers are deposited on top, leaving a buried surface of erosion. Unconformities are important in geology because they show that some events—such as uplift, erosion, or a pause in sediment deposition—interrupted the normal sequence of rock formation. They can be identified by missing layers or differences in the angle or type of rock on either side of the boundary. There are several types of unconformities, including nonconformities (where sedimentary rocks lie atop older igneous or metamorphic rocks), angular unconformities, and disconformities. Each type reveals a different kind of interruption in Earth’s history, making them key clues to reconstructing past geological events. |
