TUFF - Tuff is a type of rock formed from volcanic ash and other small fragments that are ejected during an explosive volcanic eruption. The material, made up mostly of particles less than 2 centimeters in diameter, settles back to the ground and gradually becomes compacted and cemented into solid rock. Because it’s made from tiny pieces of volcanic glass, minerals, and rock fragments, tuff often has a rough, grainy texture and can range in color from white and gray to pink or brown depending on its mineral content. It can be soft and lightweight or more solid and durable, depending on how it formed. Tuff is often found in layered deposits and can be seen in many volcanic regions around the world. It’s useful to geologists for studying past eruptions and understanding volcanic activity. |
