TROUGH -

In desert landscapes, a trough refers to a long, narrow, shallow depression that lies between ridges or crests of sand dunes. These low-lying areas form as a natural part of dune systems where wind action sculpts and reshapes the sand. As the wind moves sand across the surface, it builds up higher areas (dune crests) and leaves behind these lower zones, or troughs, in between. Troughs can vary in size depending on the type of dune and wind conditions. They may act as temporary pathways or channels for wind and, during rare rainfall events, can briefly collect water. Troughs are important features in understanding dune dynamics and the movement of sand in desert environments. Their formation and change over time help geologists study wind direction, speed, and landscape evolution in arid regions.
