TRILOBYTES – Trilobites were a diverse and widespread group of marine arthropods that thrived in Earth's oceans during the Paleozoic Era, especially from the Cambrian to the Permian periods (about 521 to 250 million years ago). They are named for their distinctive three-lobed body structure, which includes a central axial lobe and two side (pleural) lobes. Trilobites had hard, segmented exoskeletons, which they molted as they grew, and their bodies were divided into three main parts: head (cephalon), body (thorax), and tail (pygidium). Some trilobites had complex eyes and could roll up for protection, much like modern pill bugs. Fossils of trilobites are found around the world and are useful for dating rock layers. Their variety and abundance make them one of the most iconic and well-studied fossil groups in paleontology. |
